about

This 2017 release marks Johannes' transition from prog to jazz rock. Featuring ex-Moth Vellum singer Ryan Downe, Katisse Buckingham, Scott kinsey, Otmaro Ruiz and Danish singer Kier.

Nearly five years after the release of his highly acclaimed debut album
“Tales From Sheepfather’s Grove”, Johannes is following up with a
stunning new record: QITARA.

On QITARA Johannes is shifting his focus from vocal driven acoustic
compositions that were the hallmark of “Tales…” to the electric guitar. A mostly instrumental album, QITARA embraces styles such as jazz,
jazz-rock, prog and even some reggae.

The single vocal performance on the album, “Sister Six”, marks the return of Johannes’ former Moth Vellum bandmate Ryan Downe, a reunion that will likely make many Moth Vellum fans very happy. Other guest players include heavy hitters Otmaro Ruiz (Arturo Sandoval,
John McLaughlin, Jon Anderson), Katisse Buckingham (Herbie Hancock, Andy Summers) and Michael Hunter (Stanley Clarke, Lenny Kravitz).

With QITARA, Johannes is continuing to process his roots, which are widespread. He grew up with the Canterbury sound, before jazz-rock was called “fusion”. His father, an avid jazz lover, turned him on to George Duke and John Abercrombie, who sadly passed away recently. These two heroes of Johannes’ are honored with the cover tracks “Faces in Reflection” and “Red and Orange”.

Throughout the record, Johannes is exploring new methods and
techniques on his instrument, yielding some otherwordly sounds in an attempt to move the guitar forward, while respecting the past.
